Phillip was born in Bogota, Colombia, South America in 1962. He started drawing portraits and studying Leonardo Da Vinci’s drawings from books at around five. In fact, his first ever sale was a portrait of Leonardo in his latter years, copied from a book. This essentially was the start of his career as an artist.
Da Vinci’s drawings of the human anatomy influenced his early work almost completely until, in 1974 the family home moved to the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean, where he came under the tutelage of one of the greatest abstract Dominican Painters of our time, Ada Balcacer.
It was his next tutor who was to have the greatest influence on his artistic career.
In 1978, he studied twice a week in the studio of Roy Reynolds, a direct descendant of Sir Joshua Reynolds, the founding president of the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
In 1980, he went to London to study a foundation course in art under Sir Roger De Grey at the city and Guilds of London Art School. Sir Roger went on to become the 21st president of the Royal Academy in 1984.
4 years later in 1982, Phillip had his first solo exhibition at the Ashley Park Hotel in Walton-on-Thames Surrey. The success of this first exhibition, led him to be invited to show his work there permanently for two years.
For the next 13 years, he worked in the graphic design industry, plying his skills as a camera-ready artist and illustrator.
He had two paintings accepted in a show at the mall galleries in 1995.
In 1999, he had another solo exhibition, at the river house gallery in Walton-on-Thames in Surrey.
To date Phillip has undertaken over 120 private commissions. Although his style has changed and developed over his 40-year career, he now mainly works in oils, using a photorealism style.
Phillip is currently planning his next solo exhibition.
